Did you know?

Neglected toothcare causes heart, kidney, liver, lung, and mouth pain in pets via spread of bacteria hematogenous.

Pet owners may or may not have a comprehensive understanding of proper tooth brushing techniques, resulting in certain areas of their teeth overlooked.

Shifting from an acute to a proactive mindset

Many pet owners typically follow an acute approach to dental care, addressing their pets’ dental issues only when they become severe. This often stems from a lack of awareness about the importance of oral health or the mistaken belief that these issues can wait.

However, this acute care strategy can lead to serious conditions that require expensive and risky procedures, such as tooth extractions and periodontal treatments. Therefore, my project aims to shift from an acute dental care to a long-term dental care approach, fostering a proactive, holistic method to dental care that prevents such severe outcomes.

Initial Test Overview

Initial Test Overview

Before testing on dogs, initial evaluations were conducted using a canine mouth model. To simulate plaque, I applied modelling clay to the model’s teeth, creating a realistic testing scenario.

Importance of Anatomical Design in Dogs Toy

Importance of Anatomical Design in Dogs Toy

While the toy improved dental health, the bristle design alone was insufficient. Observations revealed that the toy doesn’t fully match the unique dental structures of dogs, making it clear that a one-size-fits-all approach falls short. The toy often missed reaching critical areas like the back molars.

This observation underscores the need for anatomical design in pet toys. By ensuring toys align with a dog’s natural jaw movement and accommodate the varied chewing behaviours and dental structures, we can enhance their effectiveness in promoting dental health.

Benchmarking

Most dental toys on the market today have a generic shape that fails to accommodate the unique anatomical structure of a dog's mouth. These designs often miss crucial areas like the molars and gum lines, resulting in suboptimal cleaning and ongoing dental issues.

By leveraging a deeper understanding of canine dental anatomy, we can create toys that fit better, reach all essential areas, and enhance oral hygiene, ultimately preventing future dental problems.
